A Lesson from the Spirit
A Parable about the Ocean
- Once the ocean was lonely. That loneliness gnawed at him so much that on quiet, dark nights he seemed to grow blacker still, hiding in that gloom.
- For what is the sun to him? Only a reflection on the water’s surface. The sun’s rays did not reach his very depths; that is impossible.
- And then?
- Then the ocean seemed to rebel, awakened, heaved his waves upward, thrusting the seabed outward, creating new islands, dry land.
And he saw how flowers bloomed on those islands, how forests grew. And he understood that those islands needed the sun, that the sun was life for those islands.
- What next?
- Don’t rush. Don’t hurry me. You already know the rest.
Those forests blossomed and bore fruit. The seeds of those fruits fell into the ocean’s waters, feeding the fish that live in him.
- Wait, you said there was no life in the ocean.
- There was life. I didn’t say there wasn’t. I only said the ocean did not feel life. That is different.
And he realized that through those seeds that fell into his waters, he received the very rays of the sun that had been inaccessible to his deepest places.
Yes, he did not feel that life. He did not understand what the sun was for, why he needed it when he could not feel it in his depths.
But then, when he raised dry land from his bottom and saw how the sun nourished those islands, breathed life into them, and that life, imbued with that same sunlight, returned back to the ocean.
- Is this a parable about the cycle of life?
- Not exactly, no.
Do you know how much you miss while hiding behind the impenetrable dark veil of solitude? How much you deprive yourself of? Sometimes it is not so frightening to show yourself. Sometimes, by revealing a few facets of your soul, you will unknowingly open up to the world.
You will allow yourself to receive those very rays of true divine radiance which, thanks to your courage and your decision, will ignite within you. In those secret depths of your being that were deprived of it because of your cowardice and unwillingness to trust yourself and the Spirit guiding you.
Many would say the ocean was wrong to raise his waves, to rebel.
But it was through that inner protest, through that despair, that the desire to change something arose.
And look how beautifully this played out in his story.
For it is not so important to see the light as to desire to be that light within yourself, shining and illuminating all the space around.
Yes, so it shall be. 🙏
************
This parable teaches us not merely to look, but to learn to notice those cries of our own soul that tear outward in despair.
This is a story about courage.
Someone will say it is a story about the Ego.
And yes, perhaps he will be right, but… is that really bad?
For it was precisely when the ocean despaired and wanted to change something, to know something within himself and not only admire from without, that he lifted islands from his depths. And life was born on those islands. This story teaches us that life around us depends on our decisions, our outlooks, even our moods. And if we give light to others, that same light will return to us. But not merely as a pretty picture before our eyes — it will ignite in the most secret depths of our soul. And that is wonderful.
