A Lesson from the Spirit

It shows some vacant lot. Like a shallow canyon. Down there stands a man. He stands in the center of a circle, and his shadow measures time.
“You measure your time yourself.”
“What does that mean?”
“Can you see the time on this clock? How do you know?”
“By the shadow the man casts, you can tell the time.”
“And what must be present for that shadow to be cast?”
“Sunlight.”
“Right. But the sun will hardly come out if the sky is overcast, will it?
These clocks are not merely a measure of time; they are something more.”
“More what?”
“It is your inner dialogue with yourself, where you agree or argue, where you are in harmony of self-knowledge or in the destruction of your nature. What does this process depend on?
It depends on the attitudes you carry within you. The shadow is something ordinary you see in daylight; the shadow is a reflection of light, it accompanies light everywhere.
Therefore, when you live out of harmony, in irritation, in your own ruin, you will not see the shadow. The shadow is that echo of you, that landmark, a beacon if you will, toward which you are drawn from the start.
It is that part of yourself that is formed in daylight. And the brighter the light burns, the more clearly the shadow is seen. Isn’t that so? The shadow is only a metaphor. But you understood what this lesson is about.
The shadow is that guide which, seeing it, you understand that there is place for light in your life and in your destiny.
The shadow is merely your awareness, which helps you, directs you, inspires you, which accompanies you always and everywhere you let light into your surroundings.
So when you are confused and clouds gather over you, awareness will not come to you. But if you quiet down, if you quell your zeal and look into the harmonious, faithful, calm part of yourself, the clouds will scatter, and the sunlight, the source of the Creator’s divine power, will illumine you with awareness.
And you will no longer stand in place in ignorance about how and where to go, but will continue on your way, moving harmoniously toward the indicated goal, step by step, like the hands of a clock.
