A Lesson from the Spirit
"Your feet grow tired when your eyes grow tired."
"What is that? A parable? About what?"
"When you find yourself on the verge of sorrow, of hardship, when in your despair you grasp the heaviness of the path, remember: it is not your feet that are weary of carrying you, but your eyes that refuse to show them the way."
"And what should one do to help one’s eyes see the path?"
"You must create it within yourself."
"Yes, but how? Create a path within oneself?"
"By the intention to see.
He who paints hills may not care to paint only fields.
Have you never watched an artist at work?
He may imagine, but will not reproduce precisely. His strokes will take different curves, different force, different shades of paint. For all that will be only an attempt to recreate what he sees with his inner sight. This is what I meant when I spoke of the desire to see the path.
You try to recreate, to transfer it, fitting it to the forms, events, circumstances you yourself encounter. But the result will be different.
Only what you feel with your own soul will be right.
When you ask to be shown your path, ask through the inner light of your soul, through that core that burns within you.
And you will see, and you will look at everything with different eyes, and roads will open before you.
Not what you imagined, but what your soul chose, without any distortions or twists.
If, however, you choose not with your soul but with your mind, through your weakness and the opinions of others, do not be surprised and do not complain when that path turns out different from what you had wished."
