A Lesson from the Spirit

"I will tell a parable."
"I'm listening."
"In one family there were no cows, no poultry, no livestock of any kind. They had nothing. They lived in extreme poverty and could not afford to visit others.
"Because they had no money?"
"Because when you visit someone you bring a gift. You carry something of yourself, some small part, some light. You carry it from your home into another home, into another family with its own customs, settled ways, its own history. But they were so poor they could share nothing. Then a kind gentleman gave them a flute.
"A flute?"
"A flute. The old man began to play it, and that music enchanted passersby. They peered into the windows, they cracked doors open and listened. And they began to bring him treats, some gift, in gratitude for that enchantment, for that warmth they received from his music.
For that music came from a pure heart, filled with love for all.
They accepted their lot without complaint and without anxiety.
What they lacked in the material world was made up for by the spiritual world in their family. And that spiritual world was so great and generous in gifts that it could bestow upon anyone who came to them.
They did not grumble, nor bewail, nor blame, nor grow angry, nor covet another's.
They filled up each day with that love, that radiance that their family kept. Generation after generation, story after story, fate after fate, they carried that light into the world.

So when you go to someone, whether to work or simply to speak with the first person you meet, remember that you always have something to give them. It is that inner light, that divine radiance that is in each of you.
It is that priceless thing praised by the mouths of many sages, kept in the depths of your soul.
That which soothes with a word, a look, an action. It is far greater than the material things people expect from you.
Do not be afraid to meet others, do not be afraid to give your light, for it will kindle in another's soul, and in the same way will be given to someone else afterwards.
