A Lesson from the Spirit
Some fragment of rock, an island hovering in the mist. There are cliffs around me, but they are very far away, and below me the stars seem to twinkle.
“You see the objects around you ambiguously.”
“Why ambiguously?”
“One reflects the other. Try saying something—what will you hear in reply?”
“An echo?”
“Right. But an echo distorts the original intent, it distorts that sound you send into the space, carrying only isolated belated syllables.
People tend to pretend, to devalue themselves and others in many ways, even to devalue what they do not possess, in which they are not distinguished.
“What do you mean?”
“To devalue certain events, the actions of others, an environment you have not been in, about which you only guessed, heard as a distant echo and saw something.
Have you ever had to run? Run fast, without looking back, as if your glance would make return what you are fleeing from, as if someone would stop you, and you would no longer recognize your path?
Each time you think to judge someone: whether they are right or not, whether their decision is sound or worthless… remember that this is only an echo, a reverberation of your reason, not your heart. The heart speaks directly, freely, purely, openly; it does not equivocate, it trusts the knowledge held in your soul.
And this echo will be distorted in your mouth by that elementary truth that is implanted in your souls. The one that comes from a pure open heart.
Each time you entertain such thoughts about anyone, even about yourself,
stop and listen.
Lower that mist around you, and the cliffs that surround you will lower with it. And your voice will pierce the silence with firm, confident will, with the sound of the true voice of your soul. As clear and distinct as truth ever is when spoken by the lips of a sage.
So be it.
