A Lesson from the Spirit
"Do you know what it is to live without knowing reasons and without knowing barriers?"
"Not quite."
"It is important to stop in time to recognize what has been done, to temper your fiery mind, to calm it. To kindle dislike, malice, aggression, envy—without cause— to stoke that fire of hatred within yourself, without cause. And the fewer the reasons for it, the less you know of barriers. For that all-consuming fire of hatred takes up more and more space inside you, pushing out your soul, taking your heart captive and seizing your breath so that you cannot breathe calmly, sleep, think, develop; you no longer belong to yourself. Seek the cause, but the cause is not in the other where you saw danger to yourself; the cause is in yourself, the cause of your unrest, irritability, and despondency. From there, from an unhealthy view of your life, a great evil feeling is born, false because it robs your life force and urges you to stop in your own knowing.
"What is to be done? Pray?"
"Pray, if you wish. Any spiritual practice that restores inner harmony will be helpful to you. So each time you feel something that is untrue, alien to you, stop, close your eyes, and call yourself to calm, to peace, to the harmonizing of your inner perception of yourself. So that through the peace you have found you may see clearly the true cause of your discontent, your irritation and rejection. And you will see how absurd, baseless, and utterly empty your accusations were.
"But what if someone is angry at the murderer of their kin and loved ones? Is that also baseless?"
"Anger is anger, whatever you call it. The cause here is clear. But you are the one who has the power to stop the destruction within yourself. To awaken malice, hatred, within yourself is to lose. To lose to others, to lose to circumstances, to lose to yourself in the eternal struggle to know your true spiritual essence. What will you choose? It is for you to decide. But remember, in moments of despair you are not alone; when you think of what is good, right, and important, think not with your mind but with your soul, with a pure, open, all-loving heart, and there you will find the answer and consolation and the support you did not feel before, for you are the one capable of loving God within yourself."
