A Lesson from the Spirit

A huge hall with high ceilings, all in gold — gold molding on the walls, on the ceilings, the tables, the chairs, even the curtains — everything is gold. So much of it! And I am standing in a floor-length gold dress, wearing gold jewelry. It makes me uneasy. So I asked the Spirit.

“Why so much gold?”
“This is a vision of your world.”
“What does it mean?”
“It’s how you see the world around you, how you perceive it. You see only the surface — jewels, shine, beauty. You cling to these material values as if they were something great and magnificent, as if they were true, as if they were what each of you strives for. But what is that, really?”

And then I am shown a fire: everything is burning, everything in flames, everything melting. All objects melt except people; the people remain whole, but they are bewildered, they look around and do not understand what is happening.

“Why did all that had surrounded them, that glitter, all disappear?”
“This is what remains if you remove all that shine — you remain. Your soul; that imperishable thing you have — that is the treasure you must strive for. While you live on Earth, the things you create for your comfort and coziness are certainly important, but not more important than your soul, not more important than your development. That is why you are here — to know yourself. You prefer to evolve with your mind, to achieve success at work. That is the program of your development, but it is not the goal. It is merely a means to reach the true goal; it is only a tool that helps you develop. These are the daily lessons you must catch to understand the order of the world, to understand how you yourself are made, why you were created, and where your soul truly aspires. Therefore it is important, but important for your development, not as the ultimate purpose intended by the Creator. The ultimate purpose of your being here is you yourself. It is your spiritual development, your knowledge of true wisdom, your knowledge of yourself and of the Divine light within you. So be it.
